There are some things you pack because you need them—and then there are those travel essentials that make you wonder how you ever traveled without them.

After years of traveling, I’ve learned that a few simple items can make a big difference. Whether you're heading out on a cruise, checking into an all-inclusive resort, or setting off on your next land adventure, these are 10 travel essentials worth making room for in your suitcase.

1. Plastic Cruise Luggage Tag Holders

If you're cruising, these are one of my favorite little investments.

Cruise lines typically provide luggage tags that you print at home and attach to your bags before arriving at the terminal. Instead of folding, stapling, or taping a paper tag around your suitcase handle, clear plastic cruise luggage tag holders keep the tag protected and securely attached.

Just make sure you purchase the correct size for your cruise line, since luggage tag dimensions can vary.

Why I love them: They're inexpensive, reusable, and one less thing to worry about on embarkation day.

2. Heavy-Duty Plastic Zipper Bags

Never underestimate the usefulness of a good heavy-duty plastic zipper bag while traveling.

I like bringing several sizes because they can be used for everything from wet swimsuits and toiletries to shoes, medications, snacks, charging cords, and anything that might leak inside your suitcase.

They're also great for organizing smaller items so you aren't digging through your luggage trying to find something.

Travel tip: Pack several empty bags inside one larger bag. They take up almost no room, and you'll probably find a reason to use them.

3. A Quality Travelpro Suitcase

Your suitcase takes a beating when you travel, so this is one area where quality matters.

Travelpro luggage is one of my favorites because it's designed with frequent travelers in mind. Smooth-rolling wheels, practical organization, sturdy construction, and thoughtful features can make navigating airports, hotels, cruise terminals, and transfers much easier.

The best suitcase isn't necessarily the biggest one—it's the one that gives you the space and organization you need without becoming difficult to manage.

Why it matters: Reliable luggage is an investment you can use trip after trip.

4. Travel Hangers

Hotel and cruise ship closets never seem to have quite enough hangers—especially when two people are sharing a room.

Slim, lightweight or foldable travel hangers take up very little suitcase space and give you extra room to hang dresses, shirts, jackets, swimwear, and other clothing.

They're especially helpful on cruises, where unpacking and organizing your cabin can make a smaller space feel much more comfortable.

5. Multi-Outlet Plug with Multiple USB Ports

Phones. Watches. Tablets. Cameras. Portable batteries.

Traveling today means traveling with electronics, and there never seem to be enough convenient outlets.

A compact multi-outlet plug with several USB ports allows you to charge multiple devices from one location instead of packing several individual charging blocks.

Cruise travelers: This one comes with an important caution. Cruise lines can have restrictions on power strips, extension cords, and surge protectors. Always check your specific cruise line's current prohibited-items policy before packing one. Look for a cruise-compatible, non-surge-protected option when appropriate.

6. Backup Phone Batteries

Your phone has become one of the most important things you carry while traveling.

It's your camera, boarding pass, map, cruise-line app, airline app, reservation holder, communication device, and entertainment center—all of which can drain a battery quickly.

I recommend carrying at least one fully charged portable backup battery, and having an extra can be especially useful on long travel days or excursions.

Just remember that airlines generally require spare lithium batteries and power banks to travel in your carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage, so check your airline's current requirements before you fly.

7. Waterproof Phone Case

If your vacation involves a pool, beach, boat, water park, snorkeling excursion, or anything else near water, a waterproof phone case or pouch deserves a spot in your bag.

Besides protecting your phone from splashes and unexpected drops, some waterproof pouches allow you to keep your phone with you while enjoying water activities.

Travel tip: Test the case at home before trusting it with your phone. Put a dry paper towel inside, submerge the empty case according to its instructions, and check for moisture before your trip.

8. Water-Resistant Cosmetics and Toiletries

Heat, humidity, swimming, and long sightseeing days can put your normal beauty routine to the test.

For warm-weather vacations, I like packing water-resistant or waterproof cosmetics that are designed to hold up better around pools, beaches, and humid destinations.

Think waterproof mascara, long-wear makeup, water-resistant sunscreen, lip products with SPF, and products that won't require constant touch-ups throughout the day.

And don't forget: liquids that are going into your carry-on need to comply with current airport security requirements.

9. Magnetic Hooks

Cruisers, this one is especially for you.

Many cruise cabin walls and ceilings contain metal, which means strong magnetic hooks can provide convenient extra hanging space without damaging the cabin.

Use them for hats, lanyards, lightweight bags, necklaces, jackets, daily schedules, or other small items you want to keep organized and off the limited counters.

They're tiny, easy to pack, and surprisingly useful.

Tip: Pay attention to the hook's rated strength and remember that its actual holding power can vary depending on the surface and how the hook is positioned.

10. Portable Luggage Scale

There are few things less enjoyable than discovering at the airport that your suitcase is overweight.

A small digital luggage scale lets you check your bag before leaving home—and, perhaps more importantly, before leaving your hotel after you've added souvenirs and vacation purchases.

They're inexpensive, lightweight, and can potentially save you from overweight baggage fees or a frantic suitcase reshuffle at the airport counter.

Pack Smarter, Travel Easier

You don't need to bring your entire house with you to have a well-prepared vacation. The goal is to pack items that solve common travel problems without taking up unnecessary space.

These 10 essentials have one thing in common: they help make traveling a little easier, more organized, and less stressful.

And that's exactly how your vacation should begin.

At Just Relax Getaways, I believe the little details matter—from choosing the right destination to helping you prepare for the journey ahead.

So pack your bags, charge those backup batteries, weigh that suitcase, and get ready to go.

Escape the stress. We handle the rest.
